Welcome to Osaka! |

Osaka is one of the most exciting and attractive cities
with distinctive culture in Japan. Full of nice dining
("Kuidaore" - means eat until you may fall
down), people with sence of commedy, and historical
spot such as Osaka castle.
Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly
in the center of Japan. Since ancient times, Osaka has
been a gathering place. Located at the confluence of
a vast web of busy river and sea routes, it naturally
grew into a flourishing economic center and became the
gateway to Japan for travelers and traders from all
over Asia. It was here that Japan first met the world.
Osaka takes on a different mood, displays a different
form of expression during each season of the year. Because
every season is beautiful in its own way, there is no
best time to visit. So why not come several different
times? And experience just how diverse and wonderful
the city can be throughout the year! |

Used to be a small district with shops selling used clothes
and second-hand books. It grew into one of the largest commercial
districts in Osaka, packed with electrical equipment discount
stores, within just few decades. People laden with shopping
bags occupy the street on weekends and holidays. |

Dotombori is a symbol of the Minami Area and a mecca for
the kuidaore food culture of Osaka. Dozens of restaurants
line the Dotomborigawa River, and large famous billboards
draw diners’attention. On the north side of the river,
where geisha used to entertain their customers, are now small
bars and restaurants squeezed together in rows. The southern
side of the river is the center of the Dotombori area, which
was once known as the theater district. Nowadays, colorful
neon signs and flash signboards enliven the area, showing
that the district still represents the passion of Osakans.
In one of Dotombori’s back streets, Hozenji-Yokocho,
small restaurants are located along the stone-paved alley,
retaining the flavor and atmosphere of old Osaka. It’s
like a step back in time. |

Osaka Castle, which is a famous landmark, a popular sightseeing
spot, and the symbol of Osaka, contains thirteen structures
which have been designated as Important Cultural Assets by
the Japanese government. Of special note are the grand gates
and turrets along the outer moat. The steep walls that rise
close to 30 meters high are made of huge blocks of stone that
were transported to Osaka from quarries over 100 kilometers
away. The sheer height of the walls and the wide moats they
rise above make for a grand sight that can be matched by no
other castle in Japan.
Also of interest are the tower’s eight roof dolphins
and the ornamental roof tiles and reliefs carved in the shape
of tigers, all of which are gilded with gold. |

Umeda Sky Building is 173 meters
high. It has an innovative form whereby the two skyscrapers
are connected at their top floors and a huge atrium
that extends about 150 meters connecting the sky and
the ground. Together they suggest a solemn atmosphere
to visitors not unlike the dome of cathedral. At the
very top of the skyscrapers, there is a rooftop observatory.
With no roof covering the observatory, the first of
its kind in Japan, visitors can feel the fresh air and
enjoy a "wind bath". This famous new place
in Osaka attracts throngs of people every day. |
